Slocum, Henry W. Jr.
Tennis
b. May 28, 1862, Syracuse, NY
d. Jan. 22, 1949
Slocum played baseball and football as well as tennis at Yale, graduating in 1883, and he received a law degree from George Washington University in 1885. A strong, steady player who liked to remain at the baseline and wait for his opponent to make mistakes, Slocum won the U. S. national singles championship in 1888 and 1889. He also won the 1889 doubles title with Howard Taylor.
Because of his law career, Slocum hardly played at all in 1890 until it was time to defend his championship, and he lost that to Oliver Campbell.
Slocum never engaged in serious competition after that defeat, but he was secretary-treasurer of the U. S. Lawn Tennis Association in 1887, treasurer in 1888, vice-president from 1889 through 1891 and in 1912 and 1913, and president from 1891 to 1893. He wrote a history, Lawn Tennis in Our Own Country.
