The Ohio high school champion in the high jump, Snyder entered Ohio State University in 1922 after serving in World War I and working for a while. He captained the track team in 1924 and 1925.
Snyder coached high school sports until 1932, when he became head track coach at his alma mater. Among the athletes he coached were Glenn Davis, Jesse Owens, and Mal Whitfield, who combined to win 10 Olympic gold medals. His athletes set 14 world records in various events and he produced 52 All-Americans.
At the 1960 Olympics, Snyder was head coach of the U. S. track team that won eight gold medals. He retired in 1965.
