Sumners began skating in 1970 in Edmonds, WA, where her family had moved when she was four years old. A very consistent, stylish skater, she won three consecutive U. S. singles championships, from 1982 through 1984.

She won the world championship in 1983 andwas favored to win the gold medal at the 1984 Winter Olympics, but was edged by East Germany's Katarina Witt. Sumners then became a professional with Walt Disney World on Ice, explaining, "I'm just ready for the relaxed part of skating."
