After serving in the Pacific during World War II, he returned to Illinois in 1946 and was again an All-American.

In 1964, Agase was named head coach at Northwestern University in his native Evanston. When the school placed second in the Big Ten in 1970, its highest finish in twenty-two years, Agase was voted coach of the year by the Football Writers Association of America. He left Northwestern in 1973 to take over at Purdue for four seasons. His overall coaching record was 50 wins, 83 losses, and 2 ties.
