Aguirre, Mark A.
Basketball
b. Dec. 10, 1959, Chicago, IL
6-6, 232 Forward. In three years as a starter at DePaul University, Aguirre scored 2,182 points, averaging 24.5 a game. A two-time All-American, he was named to the 1980 U. S. Olympic team that didn't play because of the country's boycott of the Moscow Games. As a junior in 1981, he was consensus college player of the year.
The 6-foot-6, 232-pound Aguirre entered the NBA's college draft before his senior year and was the first player chosen, by the Dallas Mavericks. Strong and clever around the basket, Aguirre was also a good outside shooter for a big man, but he developed a reputation for moodiness and not always playing at his best that sometimes hampered him as a professional.
Injuries limited him to just 51 games and an 18.7-point average in his rookie year. He had his finest professional season in 1983/84, when he led the NBA in field goals with 925, averaging 29.5 points per game.
Late in the 1988/89 season, Dallas traded him to the Detroit Pistons, where he became a part-time player, brought off the bench for his scoring ability. He played on two NBA championship teams with the Pistons, in 1989 and 1990.
Aguirre finished his career with Los Angeles Clippers. He retired after the Clippers cut him midway through 1993-94 season.
