Amling entered Ohio State University in 1942 and enlisted in the Army after his freshman year. Assigned to Ohio State by the Army in 1944, Amling continued his studies and played football. A 6-foot, 197-pound lineman, he was named All-American as a guard in 1945 and as a tackle in 1946. Amling captained the 1946 team.
Amling was also a starting guard on the Ohio State basketball team, which went to the NCAA final four in 1945 and 1946.
After graduating in 1947, Amling turned down a chance to play for the NFL's New York Giants in order to practice veterinary medicine.
