A graduate of Otterbein, Anderson coached high school basketball in Toledo and Akron before becoming head coach at the University of Toledo in 1935. He was there through the 1941-42 season, then went to Bowling Green from 1942-43 through 1962-63. He had a 142-41 record at Toledo and a 362-185 record at Bowling Green for an overall mark of 504 wins and 226 losses.
Six of Anderson's teams went to the National Invitation Tournament and one played in the NCAA tournament. He coached two other members of the Hall of Fame, Al Bianchi and Nate Thurmond.
