Representing California State-Northridge, the 5-foot-6, 125-pound Anderson won the AIAW long jump in 1977 and 1979 and was the pentathlon champion in 1979. She was also the national outdoor long jump champion in 1977, 1978, 1980, and 1981.
Anderson finished first in the long jump and pentathlon at the 1980 Olympic trials, but the U. S. boycotted the Moscow Games that year. After missing most of the 1983 season with a knee injury, she was second in the pentathlon at the 1984 trials. However, the knee injury recurred at the Olympics and she was forced to withdraw.
Anderson played the character "Pooch" in the 1982 movie, Personal Best.
