Arie competed in trap shooting's Grand American Handicap for more than thirty years. He won the first GAH doubles championship in 1912 and won it for the second time twenty-two years later, at the age of fifty-two. In 1917, he tied for the singles title, but lost the shoot-off. In the GAH, contestants shoot from varying distances, based on their averages. Arie in 1923 became the first ever to win the championship from the maximum distance of 23 yards, and he did it again in 1928. He was a member of the All-American trap shooting team six times, including the first four years the team was selected, 1927 through 1930. Arie won the trap shooting gold medal at the 1920 Olympics and was also on the gold medal U. S. team. Trapshooting Hall of Fame
