One of the first world-class speed skaters from the United States after World War II, Ashworth won a bronze medal in the 500-meter event at the 1960 Winter Olympics, when she was a physical therapy student at Tufts University. She also finished eighth in both the 1000- and 3000-meter races that year and in 1964 she finished fourth in the 500-meter.

Ashworth was the national outdoor champion in 1961, 1963, and 1967, the indoor champion in 1957, 1959, and 1963. She won the open outdoor title in 1966 and 1967, the open indoor in 1966, and was North American outdoor champion in 1961.
