Baker, Terry W.
Football
b. May 5, 1941, Pine River, MN
The first Heisman Trophy winner to play in the NCAA basketball tournament, Baker starred as a football quarterback and basketball guard at Oregon State after having been a high school All-American in both sports. He went to the school on a basketball scholarship and also became a starter in football during his sophomore season.
As a senior in 1962, Baker led the nation in total offense with 2,276 yards, was a consensus All-American, and won both the Heisman and Maxwell Trophies as the season's outstanding college player. He averaged more than 10 points a game in the 1961/62 and 1962/63 basketball seasons, helping to lead Oregon State into the NCAA tournament both years.
The first player chosen in the 1963 NFL draft, Baker was with the Los Angeles Rams for three seasons, but never became a starter. He retired after the 1965 season to earn a law degree.
