At the University of Iowa, Banach had a 92-14-3 record as a heavyweight wrestler, winning NCAA championships in 1981 and 1983. He won the gold medal in the light-heavyweight class at the 1984 Olympics, and his twin brother Ed won the 198-pound division.
Banach trained for the Olympics while serving in the Army, when he was also an assistant wrestling coach at the U. S. Military Academy. He later conducted wrestling clinics and studied for a master's degree at Penn State University, where he was a graduate assistant coach.
