Gymnastics, Track & Field
b. March 18, 1924, Philadelphia, PA
One of a very few athletes to win a national title in more than one sport, Marian Twining won the basketball throw at the national indoor track and field championship in 1941. The meet wasn't held for the next two years because of World War II, but she won the event at the next two championships, in 1945 and 1946. In 1951, as Mrs. Barone, she won the basketball throw for the fourth time.
She also won national gymnastic championships in the uneven parallel bars in 1945 and 1951, and in the vault in 1950. She tied with Clara M. Schroth for the vault championship in 1945, and she was a member of the U. S. women's Olympic gymnastics team that won a bronze medal in 1948.
