Baughan, Maxie C. Jr.
Football
b. Aug. 3, 1938, Forkland, AL
An All-American center/linebacker at Georgia Tech in 1959, Baughan joined the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles as a second-round draft choice in 1960. He became a starter at right linebacker immediately and was named to the all-pro team in 1964.
The 6-foot-1, 227-pound Baughan was traded to the Los Angeles Rams for three players before the 1966 season and made all-pro again in 1967. The captain of the Los Angeles defensive unit, Baughan was responsible for coordinating George Allen's very complex defense that gave up just 186 points. The Rams won the Coastal Division championship that season.
Ankle surgery in 1968 and knee surgery in 1969 slowed Baughan, but he played through pain for two more seasons. When Allen took over the Washington Redskins in 1971, he again traded for Baughan. However, the injuries forced his retirement before the season began. Baughan had 18 career interceptions and scored 1 touchdown.
