Diving
b. March 6, 1903, Philadelphia, PA
d. April 6, 1988
On a doctor's advice, Becker began swimming as a child to strengthen her body, and then she became a diver. The U. S. indoor 3-meter champion in 1922 and 1923 and the 1-meter champion in 1924, Becker won a gold medal in the springboard diving event at the 1924 Olympics and took a silver in the platform.
At the Olympics, she met Clarence Pinkston, the winner of two bronze medals. They were married a year later and she gave birth to twins in 1926. Pinkston retired from competition after 1924 and became Becker's coach. She won the national indoor 3-meter title in 1926 and a second Olympic gold medal, in the platform event, on August 11, 1928, the day the twins turned two years old.
