A starting halfback for three years at the U. S. Naval Academy, the 5-foot-9, 180-pound Bellino won the Heisman Trophy as the nation's outstanding college football player after a brilliant 1960 season. He rushed 168 times for 834 yards, caught 17 passes for 280 yards and 3 touchdowns, and also threw 2 touchdown passes on the halfback option. Bellino not only returned kicks, he did Navy's punting.
Bellino spent his mandatory four years in service after graduating and joined the AFL's Boston Patriots in 1965. In his 3 seasons with the Patriots, he was used mainly as a kick returner. He ran back 43 kickoffs for 905 yards, a 21.0 average, and 19 punts for 148 yards, a 7.8 average. Bellino also rushed 30 times for 64 yards and caught 11 passes for 153 yards and 1 touchdown.
