An All-American guard in 1909 and 1910, Benbrook captained the 1910 Michigan team that was undefeated in 6 games, winning 3 and tying 3, including a scoreless tie against a Pennsylvania squad that won 9 of 11 games and lost only 1 that year. He was named to Bob Zuppke's all-time All-American team in 1951.
Benbrook starred in Michigan's 6-0 victory over Minnesota in 1910. After blocking a field goal attempt, he made the key block on Michigan's game-winning touchdown, the only one scored against Minnesota that season.
