Benedict, "Benny" (Clinton)
Hockey
b. 1894, Ottawa, ONT
d. Nov. 13, 1976
Though he played during a high-scoring era, Benedict still holds the record for most career playoff shutouts with 15 and the most in a single Stanley Cup playoff season, 4 in 1928.
Benedict entered the NHL with the Ottawa Senators 1917. He led all goaltenders in 1919-20 with a 2.7 goals-against average and 5 shutouts in just 24 games; they were the league's only shutouts that season. He led again in 1920-21 with a 3.1 average and 2 shutouts.
Benedict went to the Montreal Maroons in 1924 and played there until his retirement in 1930. In the 1926 Stanley Cup finals, Benedict had 3 shutouts in 4 games against Victoria.
His nose was broken by a Howie Morenz shot during the 1929/30 season and Benedict began wearing a mask for protection, probably the first goalie to do so, but he gave it up after a few games because he said it obscured his vision.
