For much of his thirteen-season NHL career, Bentley was the left wing on the Chicago Black Hawks' "Pony Line," with his brother Max at center and Bill Mosienko at right wing. He joined the Black Hawks for the 1939-40 season and played with them through 1952-53, missing one season while serving in World War II. He spent his final season, 1953-54, with the New York Rangers.
He was the league's leading scorer in 1942-43 with 73 points, edging Bill Cowley of Boston, who had 72, and his brother Max, who had 70. The following season, he scored 77 points but finished second. He was among the top ten scorers four other times and was a first-team all-star three times.
