After playing on the men's golf team at Oklahoma City University, Berning joined the LPGA tour in 1964, when she was named rookie of the year. She has won only 11 LPGA tournaments, but three of her victories were in the U. S. Women's Open, in 1968, 1972, and 1973. Only three other players have won the Women's Open more than twice.
Berning's first tour victory was the Muskogee Civitan in 1965, when she also won the Western Open. Her playing schedule has been limited since 1968, when she married Dale Berning and played in only nine tournaments.
Her daughter, Robin, was a member of the Ohio State women's golf team. At the 1989 Konica San Jose Classic, they became the first mother and daughter to compete in the same LPGA event.
