Hockey, Lacrosse
b. Sept. 18, 1933, Huntsville, ONT
In the early part of the century, many hockey stars were also fine lacrosse players. Bionda was the last of this breed, but his lacrosse career was much more distinguished than his hockey career.
He began playing lacrosse in his native Ontario, then moved to British Columbia. Between 1955 and 1962 he played on five teams that won the Mann Cup, awarded to Canada's best amateur team. Bionda was twice most valuable player in the Mann Cup tournament and he scored three or more goals in nine games, a career record.
Bionda also played four seasons in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Boston Bruins, scoring 3 goals and 9 assists in 93 regular-season games between 1955-56 and 1958-59.
