At Oklahoma State University, Blubaugh won the NCAA and AAU national 157-pound championships in 1957. After graduating, he repeated as AAU champion in 1958 and 1959 and won gold medals at the 1959 Pan-American Games and the 1960 Olympics.
Blubaugh was named the world's outstanding wrestler after his Olympic championship. He later served as an assistant coach at several colleges before becoming head wrestling coach at Indiana University in 1972.
