The only diver before Greg Louganis to win a world title in the same event three times, Boggs was the springboard champion in 1973, 1975, and 1978.
The strong, stylish Boggs won the 1971 NCAA 3-meter springboard title, representing Florida State. He then entered the U. S. Air Force. Boggs had risen to the rank of captain when he won a gold medal in the springboard event at the 1976 Olympics. Shortly after the Olympics, he left the service to study law at the University of Michigan.
The national 3-meter outdoor champion four years in a row, from 1972 through 1975, Boggs also won the indoor title in 1973 and 1975.
