In 1969, Bonds hit 32 home runs and stole 45 bases, becoming the third player in history to have more than 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases in a single season. The first two were Willie Mays and Henry Aaron. He narrowly missed becoming the first member of the "40-40 Club" in 1973, when he stole 43 bases and hit 39 home runs.
A right-handed outfielder, Bonds joined the NL's San Francisco Giants during the 1968 season. His best offensive year was 1970, when he batted .302 with 26 home runs, 48 stolen bases, and 134 runs scored.
He spent the 1975 season with the New York Yankees and then went to the California Angels. After two seasons there, Bonds was with the Chicago White Sox and Texas Rangers in 1978. He played for the Cleveland Indians in 1979, the St. Louis Cardinals in 1980, and the Chicago Cubs in 1981, his final season as a player.
His son, Barry, has been the National League's most valuable player five times since 1990.
