Borries, "Buzz" (Fred, Jr.)
Football
b. Dec. 31, 1911, Louisville, KY
d. Jan 3, 1969
Borries was an All-American halfback at Navy in 1934, and two opposing coaches explained why. Columbia's Lou Little said, "Borries beat my Columbia team single-handed, and that was the only game we lost in 1934." Pittsburgh's Jock Sutherland described him as "the best football player we met all year."
His nickname was short for "Buzzsaw," because that was the way he ran, driving determinedly at the defense until he burst through. He was also a good passer and an outstanding defensive player.
