Bossy, "Mike" (Michael)
Hockey
b. Jan. 22, 1957, Montreal, Quebec
A right wing, Bossy was the key offensive player on the New York Islander teams that won four straight Stanley Cups from 1980 through 1983. He won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player in the 1982 Stanley Cup series, when he tied a record by scoring 7 goals in a four-game sweep of the Vancouver Canucks in the final series.
He joined the Islanders in 1977 and spent his entire 10-year NHL career with the team. Bossy won the 1978 Calder Trophy as the league's rookie of the year, scoring 91 points in just 73 games, and he won the Lady Byng Trophy, for a combination of playing ability and sportsmanship, in 1983, 1984, and 1986.
Although he never led the NHL in any scoring category, he was consistently among the leaders. He set a record by scoring 50 or more goals in nine consecutive seasons, and he also had 91 or more points in each of those seasons, with a high of 147 in 1981-82.
When the Hockey News chose the top 50 NHL players of all time in 1998, Bossy finished 20th in the balloting.
