After serving in the Marine Corps during World War II, Brand enrolled at Iowa State University and won 54 of 57 matches, including 35 in a row. He was the NCAA champion in the 175-pound division in 1948.
Brand won the gold medal in the 174-pound class at the 1948 Olympics. He then returned to college, but an injury ended his competitive career after seven more victories. He later served as a volunteer wrestling coach at the Omaha YMCA.
