Brewer, Charles
Football
b. March 8, 1873, Honolulu, HI
d. June 13, 1958
Brewer might well have been a four-time All-American, but he missed most of the 1894 season with an injury. He was on Walter Camp's All-American teams in 1892, 1893, and 1895. A halfback, Brewer was the ball carrier when Harvard introduced the famous "flying wedge" play against Yale in 1892. The result was a 30-yard run.
The play was outlawed before the 1894 season. However, even without the flying wedge, Brewer ran 95 yards for a touchdown in a 26-6 victory over Brown in 1895 and also had a 40-yard touchdown run in a 17-14 loss to Pennsylvania that year. During his three All-American seasons, Harvard won 30 games, lost 4, and tied 1.
