Brickley, Charles E.
Football
b. Nov. 24, 1891, Boston, MA
d. Dec. 28, 1949
The greatest drop-kicker of his time, Brickley brought Harvard the "Big Three" championship in 1913 by scoring all the school's points on field goals in a 15-0 win over Yale and a 3-0 win over Princeton. He had 13 field goals that season and a total of 34 for his three-year career, both records for drop-kicking.
An All-American halfback in 1912 and 1913, Brickley coached Boston College to a 12-4-0 record during the 1916 and 1917 seasons. He also played at times for the Canton Bulldogs and Massillon Tigers, who were among the top professional teams before the NFL was organized. Brickley and Jim Thorpe of Canton often staged kicking exhibitions at halftime.
During the early 1920s, he coached and played for his own independent professional team, known as "Brickley's New York Giants," who predated the current NFL franchise.
