Broadbent, "Punch" (Harry L.)
Hockey
b. 1892, Ottawa, ONT
d. March 6, 1971
Broadbent's nickname had a double meaning: He had undoubted scoring punch and he was also one of the best fighters in the NHL. In the 1921-22 season, he performed the rare feat of leading the league in scoring and penalty minutes. He set a record that season with at least one goal in each of 16 consecutive games.
His professional career began in 1908 with Ottawa of the National Hockey Association. After serving in World War I, he returned to the Ottawa team in 1919; the NHA had become the NHL in the meantime. Broadbent went to the Montreal Maroons in 1924, returned to Ottawa in 1927, then played one season with the New York Americans in 1928/29 before retiring to join the Royal Canadian Air Force.
He scored 122 goals and had 45 assists in his 11 NHL seasons, adding 10 goals and 3 assists in 10 playoff series.
