Browning won his first national diving championship, the AAU outdoor 3-meter springboard competition, in 1949. As a student at Ohio State, he dominated springboard diving in 1951 and 1952, winning the NCAA 1-meter and 3-meter as well as the AAU indoor 1-meter and 3-meter championships in both years.
He was also the AAU outdoor 3-meter and platform champion and the indoor 1-meter and 3-meter champion in 1954. Browning turned in an outstanding performance at the 1952 Olympics, winning a gold medal in the springboard competition without having a single score lower than 7.0 and averaging better than 8.0 on nine of his twelve dives.
Browning was an officer in the Navy when he died in the crash of a jet plane shortly before he was to begin training for the 1956 Olympics.
