Burroughs was with the AL's Washington Senators for parts of the 1970 and 1971 seasons and he spent 22 games with the team in 1972, after it had moved to Texas and become known as the Rangers. He became a starter in 1973, playing mostly in the outfield with some stints at first base and as a designated hitter.
In 1974, Burroughs batted .302 with 25 home runs and 118 RBI to win the league's most valuable player award. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound right-hander went to the Atlanta Braves in 1977 and led the NL in walks with 117 in 1978. He played for the Seattle Mariners in 1981 and the Oakland Athletics from 1982 through 1984 before ending his career as a designated hitter with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1985.
In 1,689 major league games, Burroughs had 1,443 hits, including 230 doubles, 20 triples, and 240 home runs. He scored 720 runs and drove in 882.
