Campbell, David C.
Football
b. Sept. 5, 1873, Waltham, MA
d. June 30, 1949
Campbell didn't enroll at Harvard until he was twenty-five, after working for a number of years, and he didn't make the varsity as a freshman. But he was a three-time All-American end, from 1899 through 1901, and he was the twenty-eight-year-old captain of the undefeated 1901 team.
Though very slender, only 171 pounds on a 6-foot frame, Campbell was surprisingly strong and durable. In his era, teams usually massed blockers who locked their arms together to protect the ball-carrier. Campbell was known for climbing right over the wall of blockers to grab the runner and pull him down.
As captain of the team in 1901, Campbell was virtually the coach. Against Army that season, he improvised a lateral play that won the game 6-0 in the closing minutes.
