Campbell, John
Harness racing
b. April 4, 1955, London, Ontario
Although he's only fifth in career wins, Campbell is by far the top money-winning driver in harness racing history with over $155 million, more than $50 million ahead of Mike Lachance, who's in second place.
Campbell began racing in 1972, primarily at Windsor Raceway in Ontario. When the track's racing secretary, Joe DeFrank, moved to the Meadowlands in New Jersey in 1975, Campbell made the same move, and won more that year than he had the previous three years combined.
His first big year was 1979, when he led in money won with $3,308,984. Campbell was the top money winner 12 of the next 17 years, setting a record with $11,148,565 in 1988. He broke that with $11,620,878 in 1990, when he won 543 races.
Through 1998, Campbell had driven 7,579 winners and earned $155,360,161. He was named harness driver of the year in 1983, 1988, and 1990. Campbell has been the winning driver in a record 28 Breeders' Crown races, and he won 4 of the 12 races in 1993.
