Track and field

b. Dec. 9, 1933, Plainfield, NJ

Other Resources

Although best known as an Olympic champion decathlete, Campbell was also a world class hurdler. Representing the University of Indiana, he won the NCAA and AAU 120-yard hurdle championship in 1955 and on May 31, 1957, he tied the world record of 13.4 seconds in the event.

At eighteen, Campbell finished second to Bob Mathias in the 1952 Olympic decathlon and he won the 1953 AAU championship in the event. He won the gold medal in 1956 with an Olympic record, but fell short of the world record because he pole vaulted only 11 feet, 1 3/4 inches, far below his usual performance.

Campbell also played football at Indiana and, briefly, with the Cleveland Browns.
