As a student at Columbia University, the nineteen-year-old Campbell won the U. S. national singles championship in 1890. He repeated after graduating in 1891 and won a third straight title in 1892, then retired from competition.
Campbell teamed with Val Hall to win the intercollegiate doubles championship in 1888 and with Empie Wright to win the 1889 title. He and Robert Huntington won the national doubles championship in 1891 and 1892.
A strong volleyer, Campbell went on a tour of Europe and England in late 1891 and early 1892, but he was unsuccessful against top British players.
