When New York University won the national AAU basketball championship in 1920, Cann was the team's leading player. An AAU All-American forward, he was retroactively named college player of the year by the Helms Athletic Foundation. He also played football and was a member of the 1920 Olympic team as a shot putter.
He returned to the school as basketball coach for the 1923-24 season and remained for thirty-five years. His 1934-35 team won 19 of 20 games, outscored its opposition 740 to 489, and was selected as Helms national champion. Cann retired after the 1957-58 season with a record of 409 wins and 232 losses, a .638 percentage.
