Cannon, "Jack" (John J.)
Football
b. April 19, 1907, Columbus, OH
d. Nov. 12, 1967
A happy-go-lucky player who refused to wear a helmet, Cannon was an All-American guard at Notre Dame in 1929 and he was named to the all-time All-American team selected by Grantland Rice ten years later. His greatest game was probably Notre Dame's 7-0 victory over Army at Yankee Stadium.
He kicked off three times and made the tackle each time, threw the block that enabled Jack Elder to run 96 yards with an interception to score the winning touchdown, and played brilliantly on defense. When the game ended, the Army players massed around Cannon to congratulate him on his play.
