Carideo, "Frank" (Francis F.)
Football
b. Aug. 4, 1908, Mt. Vernon, NY
d. March 17, 1992
Knute Rockne called the 5-foot-7 Carideo the best quarterback he ever saw. During Carideo's junior and senior years, 1929 and 1930, Notre Dame won all 19 of its games. A dangerous runner, good passer, and very intelligent signal caller, Carideo also excelled as a punter who could put the ball out of bounds near the opposition's goal line.
In 1929, Carideo had three touchdown runs of 65 yards or longer. For the 1930 team, generally considered Rockne's best, he salvaged an undefeated season by throwing a touchdown pass to beat Army, 7-6.
After graduating, Carideo served as an assistant coach at several colleges, and he was also basketball coach at Mississippi State from 1936/37 through 1938/39.
