Carnesecca played basketball at St. John's University and was also an assistant coach as a student. After graduating in 1950, he became a teacher and coach at St. Ann's Academy in New York City and guided the school to three national Catholic high school championships in seven seasons.
In 1957, he returned to St. John's as an assistant coach and was named head coach in 1965. Carnesecca became general manager and coach of the ABA's New York Nets in 1970, but had only a 114-138 record in three seasons there and went back to St. John's in 1973.
Carnesecca retired after the 1991-92 season with a 526-200 record. He ranks 27th all-time in victories and his .725 winning percentage is 26th best in history.
