Carr, Austin
Basketball
b. March 10, 1948, Washington, DC
The second college player in history, after Pete Maravich, to score more than 1,000 points in each of two seasons, Carr was an All-American guard and player of the year for Notre Dame in 1971. In his three years as a starter, he scored 2,560 points, averaging 34.6 per game, hitting 1,107 of his 1,923 field goal attempts and shooting .814 from the free throw line.
Carr was the first player chosen in the NBA college draft, by the Cleveland Cavaliers. He averaged 21.2 points per game as a rookie in 1971-72 and more than 20 points a game in each of the next two seasons. However, a knee injury late in 1974 cut his playing time and reduced his productivity.
After nine seasons with Cleveland, Carr was selected by the Dallas Mavericks in the 1980 expansion draft. He played just eight games with Dallas before being traded to the Washington Capitals, and he retired when the season ended.
In 682 regular season NBA games, Carr scored 10,473 points, an average of 15.4 per game, and had 1,878 assists. He scored 212 points in 18 playoff games.
