The first pole vaulter ever to clear 14 feet, Carr made that height exactly at the IC4A outdoor meet on May 25, 1927. Earlier in the year, he had set an indoor pole vault record of 13 feet, 7 1/8 inches and raised that mark to 13 feet, 9 1/4 inches.
At the 1928 AAU indoor meet, Carr became the first to clear 14 feet indoors with a vault of 14 feet, 1 inch. Lee Barnes broke his world outdoor record that year, but Carr won the 1928 Olympic gold medal in the event, while Barnes finished fifth.
Representing Yale, Carr won the IC4A outdoor championship from 1926 through 1928; he tied for the indoor championship in 1927 and won it outright in 1928.
