A baseball and football star in high school, Carter served in the Navy during World War II and played minor league baseball as a pitcher and infielder for one season. He then returned to St. Louis to manage a bowling center.
Often referred to as "Mr. Bowling" because of his tireless promotion of the sport as well as his skill, Carter was named bowler of the year in 1953, 1954, 1957, 1958, 1960, and 1962. He won the 1962 Hickok Belt as the professional athlete of the year, the only bowler ever to achieve that honor.
A four-time winner of the All-Star tournament, in 1952, 1954, 1956, and 1958, Carter led the PBA in money won in 1960 and 1962 and had the top scoring average in 1962. He was named the best bowler of all time in a 1970 poll.
