Case, Everett N.

Basketball

b. June 21, 1900, Anderson, IN
d. April 30, 1966

Although he never played serious competitive basketball, Case became one of the most successful high school coaches in Indiana history. He compiled a record of 467 victories and only 124 defeats in 23 seasons, beginning at Connersville High when he was only eighteen. His Frankfort High School teams won four state championships.

A 1923 graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Case served in World War II and was hired by North Carolina State in 1946. He quickly made the school a major basketball power, winning 20 or more games in each of his first ten seasons. The Wolfpack won seven straight regular season Southern Conference championships and six straight tournament titles. The school moved into the newly-formed Atlantic Coast Conference in 1954 and won four more post-season tournaments.

An 11-15 record in 1959-60, Case's first losing season, began a decline that resulted in his resignation just two games into the 1965-66 season. An ulcer, doubtless caused by the emotional pressures, was a contributing factor. The ulcer became perforated in 1966 and Case died after surgery.

His estate totaled more than $200,000. He left $1,000 to Frankfort High School, $5,000 to the North Carolina State scholarship fund, and the rest of the estate was distributed among fifty-seven of his former players.
