Chandler won the AAU national indoor 1-meter springboard event in 1975 and was the springboard gold medalist at the Pan-American Games that year. She won the national indoor 3-meter championship in 1976.
At the 1976 Olympics, Chandler was the surprise gold medal winner in the springboard, taking the lead on the first dive over defending world champion Christine Kohler of East Germany and never relinquishing it.
After returning from the Olympics, Chandler entered the University of Alabama. In her last major competition, she finished third in the three-meter springboard event at the 1978 world championships. Shortly afterward, injuries forced her to retire from competition. She later did television commentary on diving events.
