In the space of less than an hour in 1984, Cheeseborough became the first woman ever to win gold medals in the 4 by 100-meter and 4 by 400-meter relays. She also won a silver medal in the 400-meter dash, finishing second to teammate Valerie Brisco-Hooks. Cheeseborough had won the Olympic Trials in an American record 49.28 seconds.
She won the national indoor 200-yard dash in 1979 and from 1981 through 1983. At Tennessee State, Cheeseborough was a member of national championship teams that set world indoor records of 1:08.9 in the 640-yard relay and 1:47.17 in the 880-yard sprint medley relay.
