Clotworthy won the 1956 Olympic springboard championship after having taken the bronze medal in 1952. He won the silver medal in the 1956 platform event, finishing just behind Joaquim Capilla of Mexico.
Diving for Ohio State University, Clotworthy was the NCAA springboard champion in 1952. He also won the national 3-meter springboard championship in 1951, 1953, and 1956 and the 1-meter championship in 1953 and 1956.
Clotworthy competed in the 1955 Pan-American Games in Mexico City, where he met Cynthia Gill, a member of the U. S. swimming team. They were married the following year. After retiring from competition, Clotworthy coached at Army, Dartmouth, Princeton, Arizona State, and Texas. From 1981 through 1984, he produced six NAIA champions at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
