Skiing
b. Dec. 11, 1952, Claremont, NH
A member of America's foremost skiing family, Bob learned to ski on "Cochran Hill" behind the family home in Richmond, VT, as did his three sisters. An outstanding technical skier, he won two national championships in every Alpine event.
He was the U. S. champion in the slalom in 1969 and 1970, the downhill in 1971 and 1973, the Alpine combined in 1971 and 1972, and the giant slalom in 1971 and 1974. Cochran and his two older sisters Marilyn and Barbara were on the 1972 Olympic ski team, which was coached by their father Mickey.
He placed eighth in the downhill at the Olympics, but the following year he became the first U. S. male to win a World Cup giant slalom, and he was also the first to win the prestigious Hahnenkamm Alpine combined title in Austria.
