Career Statistics
The highest scoring defenseman in NHL history, Coffey joined the Edmonton Oilers in 1980. An excellent skater and stick-handler, he soon established himself as one of the league's best on power plays because of his shot variety and passing skills.
Coffey had three straight season with more than 100 points, 1983-84 through 1985-86, and won the Norris Trophy as the league's outstanding defenseman in 1985 and in 1986.
Coffey played for Edmonton's Stanley Cup champions in 1984, 1985, and 1987, then was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he played on another Stanley Cup winner in 1991. The Penguins traded him to the Los Angeles Kings during the 1991-92 season, and he went to the Detroit Red Wings during the 1992-93 season.
Since then, his point totals have declined every year, in part because of injuries that have cut into his playing time.
Coffey holds a number of records for a defenseman, including most career goals, 385; most career assists, 1102; most career points, 1,487; most goals in a season, 48 in 1985-86; most assists, 6, and most points, 8, in a game, set on March 14, 1986; most goals, 12, most assists, 25, and most points, 37, in the playoffs, set in 1985; and most points in a single playoff game, 6, set on May 14, 1985.
