The first rower to win three consecutive Olympic gold medals in the same event, Costello won the double sculls in 1920, 1924, and 1928. He teamed with his cousin, John B. Kelly Sr., for the first two victories and with Charles McIlvaine for the third.
Costello won the national championship single sculls in 1922, the association single sculls in 1919. He also teamed with Kelly and McIlvaine to win a number of national doubles sculls titles.
